Remaining Speechless - Charcoal and pastel on paper by Lili Jaber

Lili Jaber is best known for her ability to capture expression in close-up portraits made from both observing photographs and from meeting and knowing the person themselves. At only 16, her style is still emerging and developing. She draws inspiration from ideas surrounding mental health in young people and the ways in which different people show their emotions. Her techniques can range from free-flowing and less strict, to more detailed and realistic.

‘I believe many people often feel embarrassed or afraid to speak out about their feelings. My aim is to demonstrate how freely we should all express our emotions.’

Lili is a pupil at Roundhay School sixth form, Leeds, and is doing her first year of ‘A’ levels, studying Art, English Language and Economics.

Her current art project is to fill big sketchbooks on a theme of her choice. She’s chosen the theme ‘Harmony and Discord’ which really looks at peace vs conflict and how opposites can work harmoniously side by side.
