Sarah Garforth

Sarah is a painter and printmaker working in Ramsgill in Upper Nidderdale. Her work reflects her rural location, inspired by rivers, reservoirs and nature. The seasons play a big part, whether it be big brooding winter skies, spring bluebells, dappled warm light filtering through the trees or autumn colour of tree lined river banks.

She works in a traditional way, collecting reference in the landscape and expanding her ideas and sketches in the studio. She uses predominantly oil with mixed media such as marble dust, graphite and oil sticks, applying with spatulas, scrapers and knives. Then working in layers scraping back in a sgraffito manner, striving to emulate a mood or the weather with markmaking and colour. She often works ‘contre jour’ creating strong accents and shadows. Her work has been described as being gentle, reflective and serene.

Selected shows over the past few years have included Chantry House gallery (solo show), The Great North Show - Ripon Cathedral, Art for Youth North and mall Galleries, Sunny Bank Mills and Brentwood.
